What to Expect
People get stuck in unproductive routines, hesitant in the face of strong emotions, and are either overwhelmed or frustrated with the notion of never being able to create change. Even the most capable individuals can have a difficult time seeing how all the pieces fit together for a bigger picture of success. And no matter who you are, or what you do, if you’re looking for a therapist it’s likely that, despite many amazing qualities, you feel you have gotten lost along the way. I don’t determine who you are, or presume to make you into something you are not. I listen to what you have to say. I help you raise awareness in a more tangible way what your values are and help you recognize whether you are moving towards or away from that vision of self.
We’re not just working on getting past crisis. You will, in time, come back to your baseline, and perhaps feel relatively better. Feeling better is a surface-level fix. What transforms people’s lives is getting:
Healthy, effective & functional
Healthier in our care and evaluation of self
More Effective in making and carrying through upon thought-out plans
Increasingly Functional in building/maintaining one’s business and personal friendships/relationships
Taking back the self-determination of the direction of their lives.
Make First Contact for Therapy:
You call or send me an email. I will call you back within one business day (typically that day if possible). We will talk a little more about what’s happening with you and then (if you feel comfortable), make an appointment.
Initial appointment
The session is likely to be the longest in the process as we are gathering information. I ask that you download the forms (see FORMS tab) and print them single sided. Sign where indicated, and bring the packet to the initial appointment. Please bring the names/contact information of doctors, schools, other involved parties, and a medication list, if applicable. If you are unable to print, you can come earlier and fill out the forms in the waiting room (though likely I will be in session until your appointment time). The session will be about 45-60 minutes. That first session is critical to the process. We are gathering information, allowing you and I to decide together if we’re a good match, and giving you some immediate help until we meet again. We will have a working plan of action at that point. We will set a recurring appointment time before you leave. Typically, especially in the beginning, this will be weekly or even twice a week.
We will address any and all happenings that have taken place since our last meeting. Of particular interest are the changes you have attempted, new insights that you took note of, and thoughts & feelings leading to either positive or negative results/consequences. The more you take the lead in identifying what is the main goal, the better. We will incorporate the major spheres of our experience, physical, psychological, interpersonal and spiritual, and recognize how these are connected and influence one another. We will challenge you to (at your own pace) to set measurable and observable plans, to make culminating steps and critique and build on these.
